On Wednesday, November 16, The Arc of Massachusetts will be hosting our 2016 Gala: Passion As Pathway…
Our honoree is Ron Suskind, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author. Ron’s most recent book Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes and Autism is the basis of the award-wining documentary Life, Animated. It is the inspirational story of Ron’s son, Owen, a young man with autism. He was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films.
In an interview in the next issue of Advocate by Leo Sarkissian, Ron discusses the nature of the relationship between parents and children with disabilities. Ron told Leo “Cornelia has a great line: ‘remember to find the joy in your child.’ The desire to fix them all the time for their own good – to be more successful in the wide world – is a constant urge for a parent who cares.” Ron continued, “But spending every minute of every day trying to fix somebody can’t be the foundation of the parent-child relationship. It’s got to be about finding love and joy.”
Please join us on November 16 and hear Ron tell the whole story.
