Leo’s Letter: Recognizing Leaders in Our Community

Last week, we gathered together at our 2019 Annual Meeting to celebrate the dawn of our 65th year! The Arc depends upon collaboration, but to remain vital, we also recognize those that help us build capacity to be there for you, our constituency. At the event, we recognized five individuals and agencies, all of whom are achievers who go the extra mile.

The picture with this blog shows The Arc US President, Fred Misilo, congratulating Janet Rico (with husband Art) as the recipient of the Joseph Andrade Leadership Award. Janet is someone who has not only helped grow our capacity through her leadership, but has also worked through countless venues to improve outcomes in health care.

Vice President Scott Borchardt and I helped applaud the achievements of:

  • Gloria Ricardi Castillo (Northeast Arc) for her work in family support and diversity
  • BAMSI for social inclusion and friendship (Tony Simonelli and Katie Driscoll accepted)
  • Jean Phelps for her leadership not only at LifeLinks but as former chair of ADDP
  • Center of Hope for its continued advocacy regionally and in the state (Erika Travinski, Sara Donnelly and Cheryl Chan accepted)

We also recognized the exceptional service of retiring Board Members John Mallin and Sean Morrissey, who gave generously in various ways. We’ll miss their service in the coming years.

Recognizing people and organizations that provide leadership and advance outcomes sustains our movement. Thanks also to those of you we didn’t get to thank this year – because we need to be together more than ever!
