We’re thrilled to announce that our Executive Director Leo Sarkissian has been featured in acclaimed photographer Bill Brett’s new book Boston: Game Changers, along with so many other amazing local leaders and heroes!
Acclaimed photographer Bill Brett’s Boston: Game Changers is a celebration of the good people of Boston and the great things they do. Bill’s sixth title, with text by Carol Beggy, marks a return to his roots in photojournalism, and seeks out the stories that are uniquely Bostonian for a compendium of more than 190 color and black and white photographs about the city and people he loves. Those showcased within this book have changed the game in Boston in some way whether by small, human gestures or grand, highly successful initiatives.
Leo’s biography in this edition reads as follows.
Those with intellectual and developmental disabilities have no greater ally than Leo V. Sarkissian, who for more than 26 years has served as the executive director of The Arc of Massachusetts, an advocacy organization that works on behalf of the 18,000 families in the state with a loved one who is intellectually or developmentally disabled. Leo previously was the president of The Arc of the South Shore for nearly seven years. In 2018, he and his Arc colleagues were on the forefront of the effort to have the Massachusetts Legislature pass a bill to establish and maintain a caretaker registry that would require employers to check to ensure that potential employees had never exploited those with disabilities in their care. This was just the latest of numerous efforts Leo has undertaken on the behalf of his constituency. Annually, Leo and his team push the state Legislature to increase funding for those who are intellectually disabled, and who face increased uncertainty when they reach 22 years of age. As the 2018 legislative session drew to a close, Leo was working on several additional bills, including loan forgiveness for caregivers, dental care, and hospital training related to autism.
