This January, Ron Mariano began his term as Speaker of the House. As majority leader, he has played a key role in advancing disability budget items and legislation.
These include expansion of services through the Autism Omnibus bill, national background checks, Real Lives bill and Nicky’s law to name a few. We welcome him as the new Speaker and look forward to working with him in his new role!
This upcoming week, we also honor the memory and work of Martin Luther King, Jr.. From Birmingham Jail, he said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
In many ways, the disability rights movement has followed the model of civil rights and the path paved by the many leaders of that movement. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the giants.
Join me for a special Leo Live on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, where I will be joined by self-advocate Gyasi Burks-Abbott and Opportunities for Inclusion CEO Gabriel Vonleh for an intersectional dialogue on the impact of the civil rights movement on the disability rights movement. Register here to attend this session.
