On Thursday, June 13, over 25 senior care and disability service professionals attended a training on Providing Future Planning to Caregivers and Individuals with I/DD.
The training was held at Hadley Farms Meeting House in Hadley and was led by Liz Mahar, Director of Family and Sibling Initiatives at The Arc of the United States; Kaitlin Stober, Research Specialist; and Jae Jin Pak, Self-Advocacy Specialist from The University of Illinois at Chicago.
The Arc of Massachusetts’ Kerry Mahoney also led a workshop on the Resources Available in Massachusetts. The Arc of Mass and United Arc co-sponsored this all day event. Massachusetts is one of three states who received a subgrant from The Arc of the US pertaining to Future Planning.
Participants learned about the importance of Future Planning, advancing self-advocacy for a self-determined life, the areas and process of Future Planning, and the professional’s role. The group was also trained in how to utilize the Center for Future Planning’s Build Your Plan Tool.
After the training, Liz Mahar noted, “We walked away energized and excited about the potential impact this group will make in the year ahead.” Over the next six months, these professionals will engage with 3- 5 caregivers over the age of 60 in future planning.
