The Arc of Massachusetts Testifies in Support of Loan Repayment for Human Services Workers Bill

The Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities held a hearing on Tuesday, May 28 and The Arc’s focus was on the Loan Repayment for Human Services Workers legislation.

Along with The Arc’s testimony from Maura Sullivan, the committee heard directly from human service workers, providers, and families who strongly advocated for passage of this bill. The bill is sponsored by Representative Jeff Roy, Representative Smitty Pignatelli, and Senator Eric Lesser.

Thank you to Ellen Taverna, Ilyse Levine Kanji and Kristen Tingley for providing excellent written testimony.

Here are some quotes from testimony delivered:

  • “This bill is critical to curbing the workforce shortage crisis.”
  • “The lack of affordable higher education opportunities for Human Services workers and the burden of student debt greatly contribute to the sector’s recruitment and retention difficulties.”
  • “These workers not only support our children and adults but they give our families strength and hope. They recharge us with their compassion and patience under sometimes challenging situations.”
