Advocates, we’ve got momentum on a bill that allows for the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units for people with disabilities and we need your help to pass it!
Now is the time to reach out to your Representative to ask the Chair of the House Committee on Bills in the Third Reading, Representative Denise Garlick, to request the passage of H.1370, An Act Relative to Accessory Dwelling Units. This bill would provide a vital option to those with disabilities and their families to build sustainable, non-congregate housing. The bill permits the creation of an accessory apartment (an in-law apartment) that could be added to a single-family home for the benefit of a person with a disability or an elderly person.
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) allow people with disabilities to remain in their communities, often where they have natural supports. Unfortunately, the demand for housing for people with autism in the Commonwealth is increasing at the same time housing costs are soaring. ADU’s offer a crucial alternative for some and makes financial sense for the state. In addition, our community saw the dangers of congregate living during the COVID pandemic, nearly 60% of deaths occurred in congregate facilities.
H.1370, filed by Rep Christine Barber has been a priority for many sessions for multiple organizations and hundreds of individuals and families. Earlier this month, The Arc sent a letter of organizational support signed by 5 advocacy groups, and a support letter from AARP went directly to Chair Garlick.
Let’s get this important housing bill across the finish line!
Thank you for your advocacy. Please reach out to Maura Sullivan at sullivan@arcmass.org with any questions.
