The 193rd Session of the Massachusetts State Legislature (also called the “General Court”) began last week. The Arc of Massachusetts held our New Legislator Orientation on Tuesday, January 10 at the State House and our friends from the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council (MDDC) joined us. With many competing trainings and orientations, we were pleased with the turnout of lawmakers and staff.
Representative Sean Garballey addressed the group about the importance of listening to the stories of their constituents who live with autism or IDD or have a family member with autism or IDD. He encouraged them to prioritize a disability issue as they learn more about their constituents and their needs.
Recently elected Representatives and Senators learned from Maura Sullivan and Leo Sarkissian about The Arc, our priorities, and our role in advancing policy with our state legislature including the unserved crisis in our state.
Representative Kate Donaghue remarked that she had met several parents who noted that they had to leave their jobs due to caregiving duties and that they continue to wait for a resolution to the crisis.
Maura, Charlie Fiske, and Leo also visited and continue to communicate with legislators regarding bills and sponsorships. Stay connected with The Arc for more updates to come on bills, the state budget, and other priorities.
