Please contact your Representative today and urge that critical autism policing legislation be brought to the House floor for a vote before the end of the year!
Many in our community have previously advocated in support of “Blue Envelope” legislation, and we need your advocacy again today.
There is still a chance that this bill can be passed this legislative session, which ends on December 31. We need your help to make sure that this bill is prioritized for a vote on the House floor before the end of the year.
“An Act facilitating better interactions between police officers and persons with autism spectrum disorder” (S.2542), filed by Representative Kay Khan and Senator Jo Comerford, will help facilitate better communication and understanding between law enforcement and autistic drivers.
Under this legislation, drivers can voluntarily request a blue envelope to attach to their car’s visor. This envelope would hold essential information, such as a driver’s license and registration, and contain specific instructions for police, including the driver’s diagnosis, triggers, contact information, and more.
This is a simple bill, with no stated opposition, that would have an enormous impact on the safety, independence, and understanding of our community. It has already passed the Senate and is currently before the House Ways & Means Committee. This puts the bill in a great position to be passed before the end of this year.
Your advocacy is critical to ensure that this bill is passed this year, so please write to your legislator today!
