Today (April 27), Governor Baker and Secretary Sudders announced major financial support for community residential providers in health and human services. Our community was recognized as well with additional 15% funding for the months of May and June beyond the existing support. We appreciate the administration’s continued responsiveness to our community in the midst of this crisis.
We all hope that Massachusetts COVID-19 illness statistics will start to drop over the next few weeks. It is difficult to imagine what others are going through as we face our own sense of loss over these weeks. But what makes us human is appreciating that for others the experience may be more than they can handle.
The Arc is pleased with revisions made in the Commonwealth’s Crisis Standards of Care released on April 20. But we still need to work together to address accommodations further with hospitals and/or a limited advisory as in NYS, which focuses on support during hospitalization. The Disability Law Center is coordinating a further effort on this issue.
Today is Patriots Day. It’s a day when we celebrate the Boston Marathon and the battles of Lexington and Concord. It’s a day, too, for remembering those who died and were injured in 2013 when two terrorists detonated bombs on Boylston Street. A common theme between 2013 and 2020 will be grief. Many within and outside our community have already experienced loss due to this virus. Others have missed memorializing the loss of a loved one due to the social distancing requirements.
