WALTHAM (May 17, 2024) – The Arc of Massachusetts announced today $1.635 million in federal funds has been allocated for a workforce recruitment program thanks to the efforts of Senator Ed Markey and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

The struggle to hire and retain staff who provide direct care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities including autism (IDD) has never been greater. A lack of staff has forced numerous human service agencies to curtail and even close program sites that assist people with IDD. It is estimated that over 3,000 adults are unable to attend day or employment services due to the workforce shortage.

The goal of the workforce program is to create a statewide marketing campaign to support staff recruitment at the 17 nonprofit chapters of The Arc of Massachusetts. Other agencies that provide services will be able to replicate it.

“I’m delighted that The Arc of Massachusetts is receiving $1.635 million in federal funding that Senator Markey and I helped secure for their workforce recruitment program,” stated Senator Warren. “With this federal funding, The Arc of Massachusetts will be able to recruit more direct care workers who provide critical care for people with disabilities. I will keep fighting for federal investments to help people with disabilities lead rich and fulfilling lives.”

Executive Director of The Arc of Massachusetts Leo Sarkissian noted that “The program should significantly increase staffing at the participating organizations.” He added, “It will provide hope to the many adults and families who are desperately waiting for services. The lack of services has a ripple effect: families and other caregivers face cutting back or quitting employment to care for loved ones, while people who cannot attend programs experience isolation and behavioral regression. We are deeply grateful for the support of Senators Markey and Warren.”
