My name is Kevin Chavez. I am a Lesley University senior and have been interning with The Arc of Massachusetts Government Affairs team since September 2024. I do research and write-ups about issues the disabled community faces, such as healthcare, police interactions, and Turning 22. I assist with facts about bills that we support, such as health equity, family members as paid caregivers, the blue envelope, and more.
I have also been visiting the Massachusetts State House along with my colleague Charlie Fiske, delivering fliers regarding bills and upcoming events to the offices of state senators and representatives. Recently, I have started delivering fliers on my own, getting a chance to engage in some small talk with the aides I encounter. As a result, I have developed pride and confidence in my networking and social skills.
Delivering fliers is not the only duty I engage in at the State House. I actively participate in events that The Arc organizes, such as Autism Advocacy Day and a panel on profound autism. These events are not just crucial; they are the backbone of our community, ensuring we are connected and engaged.
While at The Arc of Massachusetts, I had the opportunity to level up my professional skills, create new networks, and forge meaningful relationships with the Government Affairs team. I am proud to have been a part of the organization.
