MassAbility Supports Independence
MassAbility (formerly known as the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission) offers a range of services that enable people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or autism to live as independently as possible. The agency provides services around pre-vocational training while in school, career planning, employment training, home and community life, school-to-work transition, and secondary school support. MassAbility also helps with identifying assistive technology resources and assisting families with getting federal disability benefits, such as social security, for which they may be entitled as well as legal resources.
For ongoing staff support on the job, DDS offers long-term solutions while MassAbility is where persons with IDD and/or autism can start to explore employment opportunities as well as getting assistance in training, job search skills and assistance with getting a job. However, MassAbility is a good place to start during high school for the ETS program (pre-employment transition).
In addition, individuals may receive home and community services through Independent Living Centers (ILC) skills training or information-referral services (see link under ILC). These programs provide support through partnerships with peers, individual counselors and coaches, as well as advocates to help tackle daily challenges, build confidence, and strengthen skills for living as independently as possible.
