When their son Ben turned 22, Nina and Derek faced a transition filled with uncertainty, delays, and limited options – a challenge all too common for families of young adults with disabilities, particularly those with complex behavior and medical challenges.

They have used their experience with an inappropriate placement to powerfully advocate for a better future. By sharing their compelling story, they helped draft a priority bill for The Arc aimed at closing systemic gaps, improving planning, including stakeholder feedback and ensuring safer, more supportive transitions for families statewide.

Their advocacy efforts are helping to create real, meaningful change for the Turning 22 process.
