This month, we are excited to be spotlighting a dedicated self-advocate on our Government Affairs Committee, Sara Donnelly. Sara asked that we shared her story as a passionate self-advocate.
“Hello! My name is Sara. I come from a close-knit family that has always supported me and helped me become the person I am today. I have had a disability since I was very young. When I was almost 8 years old, I joined Special Olympics, where I learned courage, teamwork, and confidence. It also helped me build friendships at school. Over the past 37 years, I’ve participated in many sports, and for the last 16 years I’ve competed in swimming, where I continue to grow and learn.
As an adult, I learned how to advocate for myself and others. My mom taught me the importance of speaking up because she advocated for me throughout my childhood and into adulthood. I have been part of The Arc Center of Hope Foundation since I was a child, and I now serve as a member on The Arc’s Government Affairs Committee. Over time, I have developed friendships with my local and state legislators. I also helped pass bills to improve our state and make the world a better place. I want to help create a world where people with disabilities are treated with dignity and not looked down on, included in every part of life, and recognized for all that we can do.”
Thank you, Sara, for being a committed advocate and for speaking up for people with disabilities!
