The Arc of Massachusetts and Advocates for Autism of Massachusetts were pleased to collaborate on the efforts by the Massachusetts Trial Court to create the Blue Card Initiative.
Modeled after the Blue Envelope program, this will be an invaluable resource for court users with autism and court personnel, to ensure that neurodivergent people who interact with our courts have access to the justice they deserve.
As the prevalence of autism continues to rise, we are seeing a parallel increase in the number of individuals with autism intersecting with our legal and criminal justice systems. They are more likely to have encounters with law enforcement and the courts than the general population; and without accommodations, proper identification, and education, the often-invisible nature of autism leads to significant challenges and even traumatic experiences.
Training and awareness for criminal justice professionals are critical for a fair system. By promoting innovative best practices like the Blue Card, Massachusetts is leading a movement toward a more responsive and informed justice system.
The Arc extends our gratitude to Deputy Commissioner Carmen Gomez and her team for the development and launch of the Blue Card. We are so grateful to have been included. Stay tuned for the formal launch this summer!
