On Wednesday, January 7, The Arc of Massachusetts and AFAM were excited to be at the State House advocating alongside self-advocates, Daniel, Jeff, Caroline, and Sam, as well as Sam’s mom, Ilyse. We met with Representatives and staff to discuss and gain support for the Blue Envelope Bill, which facilitates better interactions between individuals with autism and police officers. This bill passed the Senate and is before the House Ways and Means Committee.
We are incredibly grateful to all the advocates for sharing their experiences and speaking so powerfully about why the Blue Envelope program matters. Thank you to the legislators and staff who took the time to meet with us and listen to these stories. Thank you in particular to sponsor Representative Mindy Domb’s office for meeting with us to discuss her ongoing advocacy on this bill.
It was an amazing day coming together to center the voices of self-advocates and family members as we work together towards passing the Blue Envelope Bill this session.
