This week, the Senate is poised to vote on a bill that would increase penalties for assaulting healthcare workers. While we support the underlying intent of this bill, we are concerned about specific sections regarding people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and autism.
We support Amendment #5, which would exclude group homes and other settings that serve people with IDD and autism. This amendment recognizes the unique nature of these settings. We also support Amendment #8, which prioritizes de-escalation and community-based alternatives.
