Dear Members of The Arc Community,

I am reaching out to acknowledge the deep concerns many have as we continue to face disconcerting news coming from leaders in Washington. We at The Arc of Massachusetts share those concerns. These are troubling times for the disability community at large, and the national discussion has brought autism to the forefront.

The Arc is working to gain clarity – every step of the way. We are standing strong with many of our national advocacy partners – The Arc of the United States, National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities, Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Autism Society, Autism Science Foundation, and others – as they respond to this rapidly changing situation.

As a parent of two young adults with autism and a disability advocacy leader, I am committed to elevating the voices of those with lived experience. My sons, who have brought extraordinary joy and meaning to my family, also have high support needs and require lifelong care and treatment. I value the science behind their genetic diagnosis of mitochondrial disease and support research that considers other factors that could contribute to the rise in prevalence, alongside better diagnostics and awareness. Human diversity in general is vast and the unique perspectives and abilities of autistic people enrich our society in immeasurable ways.

Standing with you, our community, my team and I have never felt more purpose. The Arc needs your continued strong commitment to our mission and advocacy. This is how we will persevere together.

With gratitude,

Maura Sullivan, MPA
Chief Executive Officer
