The Arc of Massachusetts was honored to take part in the two-day Profound Autism Summit last week at the Boston Park Plaza. More than 1,000 attendees gathered for this vital event, which brought together families, experts, and policymakers to tackle the unique challenges and opportunities facing 1 out of 4 people with autism.
A major highlight was the presence of Governor Maura Healey. The Arc is grateful for her commitment to adults with profound autism as exemplified by her recent Executive Order. Her heartfelt address provided a powerful sense of hope for families.
The Summit also featured deeply personal moments, including a panel where The Arc’s CEO Maura Sullivan joined fellow parents to discuss the complexities of residential transitions. “Sharing my family’s journey was an exercise in humility,” Maura reflected. “I spoke about the strain and the lessons learned, but also the need to break the stigma that residential support is a failure. In reality, it is often the bridge to a more sustainable, loving, and present family life.”
