For far too long, outdated and harmful words about people with disabilities have remained in our laws – words that do not reflect who we are as a state or how we value people with disabilities.  The Massachusetts House of Representatives, by a unanimous vote, has boldly taken action to remove such archaic and offensive language from state law.

We are deeply grateful to House sponsors Speaker Ronald Mariano, House Ways & Means Chair Aaron Michlewitz, Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities Chair Jay Livingstone, Representative Michael Finn, and Representative Sean Garballey for their determined efforts. Having passed the Senate this past summer, this bill is now one step closer to becoming law – we will see it through to the finish line.

The Arc has led this advocacy for over 10 years, and this would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of thousands of advocates and families, and dozens of legislators who have stood with us to affirm dignity and respect for all people with disabilities.  This passage marks a powerful step towards inclusion and reminds us that advocacy takes time and commitment.
