The Arc has already shared the news that the Archaic Language Bill passed into law this session, but today we were proud to celebrate this victory with Governor Maura Healey!
She signed the bill formally today, Monday, September 21, removing the “R-word” and other harmful, hateful terms from Massachusetts General Law. Special thanks to Chair Jay Livingstone and his committee for their tremendous leadership and partnership!
We’d also like to extend immense gratitude to self-advocates like Melissa Reilly, Brian Heffernan, Dan O’Donnell, and dozens of others who shared their personal stories on why this change matters; and to State Representative Michael J. Finn, Representative Sean Garballey, Senator Pat Jehlen, and all of our legislative supporters.
While updating state law is a major victory, our work toward social change continues — especially as harmful language remains on the rise. Today proves what perseverance, community, and strong partnerships can achieve.
