We want to acknowledge the fear and anxiety our community has felt this week, but your voices made an impact.
Over the past 48 hours, 1,100 of you mobilized through calls, letters, and action alerts in support of critical changes to the healthcare workplace violence bill. The Arc team was engaged in frequent debate, discussions, and conversations with legislators.
Because of your advocacy, the Senate adopted Amendment #8, which prioritizes de-escalation and community-based alternatives.
Additionally, the Senate adopted a redrafted version of Amendment #5, which secures vital protections for our community. This new language achieves several crucial changes:
- A One-Year Stay on Arrest Provisions: The implementation of arrest provisions in group homes is paused for one year.
- Mandated Accountability: During this one-year period, a formal report must be completed to address alternative appropriate placements, resources and staff training available specific to group homes.
We held the line. Our community’s concerns have been heard, and we will continue to shape the findings of this report to ensure our values are fully protected. Thank you to Senator Robyn Kennedy and Senator Cindy Friedman for filing these needed amendments and working with us so closely.
The bill now moves to a Conference Committee to reconcile the House and Senate versions. We are not giving up. Rest assured that The Arc will actively be working to make the final bill stronger. This is a critical window to ensure the final legislation safeguards our community.
